In Nigeria, universities are either owned by the federal or state governments or by private organizations, individuals, or religious groups. Our focus in this post will be on private universities. Private Universities in Nigeria are universities that are established, controlled, and funded by private individuals or groups with little to no interference from the government.
Private university education began fully in 1999 during the Obasanjo regime with the establishment of three universities. These were based on the belief that these private universities have the capacity to increase enrolment and cater to an increasing number of people seeking admission. This would also mean that thousands of students would no longer have to leave the country to pursue their studies elsewhere, thereby improving the economy of the country.
The oldest private university in Nigeria is Igbinedion University, Okada (IUO) is the first private university in Nigeria, it was established in the year 1999. The University is located at Okada, headquarters of Ovia North-East Local Government Area, Edo State.
Why are private university fees expensive.
The private university is expensive due to many factors, but I will just mention three:
1. Exclusion of private University from Tertiary Education Trust Fund.
the federal government established an education trust fund in 1993, to complement the main source of funding for Nigerian tertiary institutions. This agency has been supporting government tertiary institutions under the
Tertiary Education Trust Fund Act. This imposes a 2% education tax on the profits of Nigeria’s registered companies. The fund has played a significant role in promoting quality and education standards in Nigerian tertiary institutions. But the law that leads to the establishment of this Tertiary Education Trust Fund doesn’t accommodate private institutions. Thereby depriving private university funds for running their institute.
2. Difficulties in accessing funds for the institute.
Private institutions rely substantially on tuition fees and other levies. These also vary from institution to institution. Another source of revenue is internally generated income. Institutions are expected to generate additional income from grants, donations, and other fundraising initiatives, also commercial activities within the institute.
3. Reason for establishment
In as much, many of the private university, claims to want to improve the standard of education, provide admission to a student, etc. The main aim of Private institutions is for profit-making. So as we expect them to improve the quality of education in Nigeria, they are also expected to make a profit for the stakeholder in the process.
How many private universities are in Nigeria?
As of 2021, according to National Universities Commission (NUC), there are 99 universities in Nigeria, and we listed them alphabetically below.
